Sweet Cherry Bakery of Apex, NC was proud to have been selected once again by the Raleigh-Durham International Airport to create a custom cake. This time, for the commencement flight services of Alaska Airlines between Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) and Raleigh-Durham (RDU) on October 1st, 2015.
The custom cake can be seen in the article below and in the slider. The cake was for 200 servings on a huge 20in x 40in board. The cake was very carefully delivered by Sweet Cherry Bakery to RDU the afternoon before the first flight took off that same evening.
The cake featured the Seattle Space Needle, Mt. Rainier, Pike Place, a cruise boat, a ferry boat, coffee and gaming. Each piece was handcrafted to fit the theme.
Being escorted by the RDU staff, many people were taking pictures and following us to the Alaska Airlines reception area. It was, in the words of our escort, “A Cake Parade!!”

The 3,779-kilometre sector will be flown daily, with the carrier using its 737-800s on the city pair. According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, the service will not face any direct competition. This brings to 82 the number of destinations served non-stop by Alaska Airlines from Seattle-Tacoma, of which Raleigh-Durham ranks as the 12th longest in distance. Michael Landguth, Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority President and CEO, commented of the launch by saying: “Each year, more than 146,000 passengers travel between Raleigh-Durham and Seattle for both leisure and business travel. By bringing the West Coast a little closer, Alaska Airlines enhances our customers’ ability to build upon the business synergies that exist between our region and Seattle, while creating great opportunities for leisure travellers who want to explore the Northwest.”
