Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky commemorated their 2010 wedding with a decadent dessert designed to accommodate gluten-free guests. The gluten-free vanilla sponge was layered with chocolate mousse and topped with white vanilla fondant, then decorated with 1,000 white sugar roses, calla lilies, and orchids. The stunning all-white cake was a fitting creation for a woman who spent much of her childhood in a house that was equally white.
It might be hard to remember, but back in 2011 Kim Kardashian’s wedding was the most-talked-about event of the year. Celebrity baker Patrick Hansen crafted an equally show-stopping cake for the televised spectacle, with alternating black and white tiers and buttercream frosting. As some snarky commenters noted, the 8-foot-tall, 600-lb chocolate chip marble cake likely lasted longer than the couple’s 72-day marriage.
At a towering 12 feet high, Liza Minnelli’s and David Gest’s complicated confection was as dramatic as the actress it was made for, featuring stark white and black coloring, stripes of sterling silver leaf, and a multitude of red and purple sugar roses. Hopefully there was a ladder present–the cake was more than twice as high as the bridal couple!
And the final winner of the coveted “most expensive wedding cake” prize? As is right and just, an actual prince and princess: The U.K.’s Prince William and Kate Middleton. Designed by Fiona Cairns, William and Kate’s elaborate cake consisted of eight tiers cloaked in white icing with 900 sugar paste flowers. And not just daisies: 17 different species of flowers adorned the cake, each with its own symbolism, including English rose, Scottish thistle, Welsh daffodil, and Irish shamrock, and Lily of the valley. The only issue? It was a fruit cake. We’re hoping this $80,000 cake was as good as it looked.
While we’ve never made a wedding cake that’s 12 feet tall or dripping in Swarovski crystals, our custom cakes are still pretty delicious!
